"Despite the protestations of the greenocracy, the real global existential threat is not fossil fuel or proper food or basic human mobility or all of the other aspects of the material economy."
Not very helpful imo. I am in my seventies and have been trying all my adult life to make people around me see the GROWING THREAT TO OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS while there is still time to take constructive action. Now it has indeed become a threat to our existence in manys ways, just as I feared it would. I agree that this has little if any relation to existentialism, which I never had much interest in anyway. But Ive watched it be developed in methodical fashion over the last 50 yrs or more. Its not going away unless we organize to make it do so. I believe the only worthwhile way to do this is to use the power we have as workers and consumers, holding fast to democracy, individual rights, and full control over those we send to carry our wishes to larger confederations. I also believe, as Orwell warned, that the power of propaganda wielded by those in control is immense and will be extremely challenging to overcome. But nothing is necessarily impossible. I dont expect to see the downfall of the powerful, but perhaps my children will, with persistence and a bit of good luck. They know how to watch out for those who mislead for their own self interest, and can evaluate the various threats that are out there and real, tho often misattributed. Thats the skill we need to teach most
Climate Change. Because the Global Warming term became ridiculous with coldest winters in over 20 yrs. Best skiing in 20 yrs, and some cooler summers when it never hit triple digits in over 10 years. It was always about how can we re-direct economies to stop it? New products, new taxes, new laws! So we got discussions about bring VAT to the US. Thank goodness that was an election loser. $Billions to Solyndra boondoggle. Chinese windturbines- electrically powered and slicing the birds to oblivion. Chinese solar panels that your electric company has incentives for you to buy. Look who gets rich from this useless, timewasting scam!
The new fear I've run across is.... "we're in the End Times." Really. People are expecting the antichrist, but, of course, they won't be there because they'll be "raptured away."
