A recent conversation about censorship left me...speechless.
File under: There is NO SUCH THING as HATE SPEECH.
Someone remarked to me that the censorship pendulum seems to have swung ‘the other way.’ It was in reference to the now acceptable revelations & conventional wisdom regarding the Covid era (stuff we knew as far back as 2020).
I was like...⬇️
I guess that was an implication that hate speech is an actual thing.
It’s not.
Speech is speech.
There’s no equally evil opposite of censorship.
Let’s not even entertain the notion of silencing even the most vile of words.
Europe is fuct.
And the bad guys — the operatives in the U.S. Administrative (as in ‘Deep’) State - would love nothing more to follow in the footsteps of the E.U., which has gone full Totalitarian.
Whether in jest or seriously, if I want to call someone a retard, or make fun of their religion, gender, sex, race, etc., I get to.
This is America.
I’m a free speech absolutist. I even supported the obnoxious behavior of the Dems during Trump’s address to Congress — including the outburst from Rep. Cane-Shaker.
If you hate my hate, hate on me back.
By the way, every single image about free speech absolutism seems to be the headline from a propagandist rag, throwing shade on the concept.
Finally found this:
If we are denied our ability to speak as we see fit, and conversely are required to parrot any speech we disagree with, how then are we any different from slaves?
Language is always evolving, and speech we now think is ok would’ve gotten you in deep trouble in previous eras. I agree that it is wrong to shut down speech; language needs to be free as any living entity does. What we need to shut down is the forcible control of other people, and using speech as the basis.
